Growing Relaxed Hair Long…
Q. Give me a brief history about your hair.
A. I’ve always had very thick type 4b/c hair as a little girl. My mom always made it seem like a part time job just to wash, blow dry and style my hair. I remember her clearing her whole afternoon and dedicating it to my hair. After she would finish, she would take the longest nap lol. By the time i was 5 years old, she couldn’t stand it anymore and gave me my first relaxer. At the age of 8, it became a ritual every Saturday to visit the hair salon with my mom to get my hair washed and treated. It was ok, but for the next 8 years of going to that salon, my hair never grew past my shoulders. This was when i started to realize that Black hair cant grow unless you’re born with long hair. Sadly, I conformed but still had a little hope left. When I turned 17, I changed salons and started going to the Dominicans to see if my hair can get some length. I heard some good things about the Dominicans and turned to them for help. I started out at neck length when i first started going to them. I went to them every 2 weeks for a wash/set and blow out. I even got highlights. I wore my hair down every single day with little to no protective styling. When my 1 year annniversary of going to the Dominicans came, my hair was at the same length I started at since i started going to them, and my ends were thin and see through. Enough was enough! I was desperate and needed answers! One thing lead to another, and somehow I ended up online researching about Black hair care. I learned a lot in a short amount of time. I was shocked to see so many Black women with long relaxed hair down there backs! After stalking LHCF, Fotki, and other black hair sites, I officially started my hair journey in November 2006 at a color damaged, dry, necklength hair.
Q. How often do you get relaxers?
A. I’m a stretcher! I love to stretch my relaxers because i find that my hair gains a lot more thickness and body when i do so. Currently, I get a relaxer once every 3 months. But since the start of my journey up until April of 2009, I would get a touch-up once every 6 months.
Q. What types of products do you use?
A. I like to keep my products very simple. I use these products weekly.
Shampoo: Neutrogena Triple Moisture Cream Lather shampoo
   Light protein conditioner: Lekair Cholesterol
Deep condtioner: Silk Elements Megasilk Moisturizing Treatment
Leave-in: Infusium 23 repairolgy and Herbal Essenses Long Term Relationship leave in
   Daily moisturizer: S-curl
Sealant oil: Jamaican Black Castor oil
Q. Why do you choose having relaxed hair vs natural hair?
A. Right now, my relaxed hair is very healthy. It’s not breaking excessively, its growing nicely, and it’s retaining length. Honestly, I really dont see the need to go natural right now. I find that having relaxed hair is easier for my lifestyle at the moment. I just have to wash it once a week, moisturize and seal once a day, and throw it in a cute bun. I dont know too much about natural hair, but I’m learning because my sister is going natural and I’m helping her care for her hair. I do plan on going natural as soon as i reach my goal length with relaxed hair though. I think my natural curl pattern is beautiful and would love to see how it looks 100% natural.
Q. What are your go to styles?
A. I dont do too many styles in my hair to avoid manipulation. I rollerset it every week and wear my hair down for a day or two. Then after that, it goes right back up into my favorite every day hair style, which is a side low donut bun. Sometimes i put it up in a high messy bun. Since i got my hair cut to full shoulder length a few weeks ago, it’s very critical for me to wear my hair up a lot to retain length.
Q. What was the best compliment you ever recieved about your hair?
A. Wow, there are so many lol. My favorite is ” Your hair looks so nice and real….how many tracks did you add?” LOL. I dont know if i should take that as a compliment or what? You know you’re doing something right when someone else thinks it’s a weave! Black girls can grow long hair!
Q. What advice would you give somebody about having relaxed hair?
A. If you choose to keep your hair relaxed, just remember that relaxed hair can grow. Dont be discouraged and chop it all off to go natural. I’m not knocking natural hair, but i feel that too many women are giving up on relaxers because they’re not putting in the effort to properly care for relaxed hair, and look at natural hair as an easy way out. Give relaxed hair a try! It just requires a little more attention than natural hair. Make sure you wash weekly, deep condition with a protein and moisture based deep conditioner, apply your leave-ins, and most importantly, do protective styles! They helped me in the long run
Q. What are your goals and how are you achieving them?
A. First and foremost, my top goal is to maintain healthy hair! Length wise, my goal for this year is Brastrap length. I am still contemplating if i want to make that my ultimate length or grow longer. I plan on achieveing these goals by doing what I’ve been doing and not changing a thing. Everything that I’m doing right now is working out well for me, and I’m very pleased with my hair right now.
